John R. Hewitt, age 60, was appointed as President and Chief Executive Officer and as a director of the Company in May 2011. Mr. Hewitt has spent his entire career in the engineering, procurement, and construction industry. Prior to joining Matrix in May 2011, Mr. Hewitt worked for approximately 25 years for various operating businesses of Aker Solutions ASA (“Aker”) and its predecessor companies, which provide engineering and construction services, technology products, and integrated solutions to the energy and process industries worldwide. Up until his appointment with the Company, Mr. Hewitt served as Vice President of Aker Solutions, where he was responsible for providing executive oversight on major capital projects in the power and liquefied natural gas industries. He also served as President, United States Operations at Aker Solutions E&C US, Inc. from 2007 to 2009 where he was responsible for managing all construction services in North America. Prior to that, he served as President of Aker Construction Inc. where he had full profit and loss responsibility for a multi-disciplined direct hire industrial construction business operating throughout North America. Mr. Hewitt holds a finance degree from Stetson University and an engineering degree from the Florida Institute of Technology. Mr. Hewitt is a member of the board of directors of Junior Achievement of Oklahoma, the Tulsa Area United Way, the Tulsa Area Salvation Army and the Philbrook Museum of Art. Mr. Hewitt also serves as an executive board member of the Tulsa Regional Chamber of Commerce.
As the current President and CEO of the Company, Mr. Hewitt provides a management representative on the Board with extensive knowledge of day-to-day operations. As a result, he can facilitate the Board’s access to timely and relevant information and its oversight of management’s strategy, planning and performance. In addition, Mr. Hewitt brings to the Board considerable management and leadership experience, extensive knowledge of the energy industry and our business, and significant experience with mergers and acquisitions.
Kevin S. Cavanah has served as Chief Financial Officer since December, 2010. Mr. Cavanah served as Vice President, Accounting and Financial Reporting from August 2007 to December 2010 and as Controller from April 2003 to August 2007. Prior to joining the Company, Mr. Cavanah served as an Accounting Manager for Williams Communications from 2001 to 2003 and as an Accounting Manager for The Williams Companies from 1998 to 2001. Prior to joining Williams Companies, Mr. Cavanah served as an Audit Manager for Ernst & Young LLP. Mr. Cavanah has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration in Accounting from the University of Arkansas and is a member of Financial Executives International.
Nancy E. Austin is Vice President, Strategic Services and Administration, with responsibility for leading our Human Resources, Training and Development and Corporate Marketing divisions.
Mrs. Austin served as Vice President, Human Resources, from January 2006 - August 2016 and as Director of Human Resources from September 2000 to January 2006. Prior to joining the Company, Mrs. Austin worked for TV Guide, Samson Resources and Villareal & Associates specializing in human resource management, employee relations, and consulting.
Mrs. Austin holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science from Oklahoma State University and is a certified Professional in Human Resources (PHR). She is also a member of the Society for Human Resources Management, World-at-Work and Tulsa Area Human Resources Association.
Rick J. Bennett recently joined Matrix Service Company as Vice President and Chief Information Officer. Prior to Matrix, Rick served ten years as the Chief Information Officer at T.D. Williamson based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His past professional achievements include Information Technology leadership positions at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oklahoma, Blakely Crop Hail Insurance, National Farmers Organization, Taylor Ball Construction Management and The Principal Financial Group.
He is currently enrolled at the University of Tulsa where he is pursuing a Masters of Energy Business (MEB) degree, has obtained an Executive Certificate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Sloan School of Management, and achieved his Bachelors of Business from Western Illinois University majoring in Management Information Systems and minoring in Computer Science. Early in his career he served in the United States Navy as an Interior Communications Electrician. A father of three, Bennett serves as past-Chairman of the Board for Junior Achievement of Eastern Oklahoma and the Deans Council for Northeastern State University College of Business and Technology.
Jack Frost has served as Vice President, Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) for Matrix Service Company since 2012. Prior to joining Matrix, he served as Global Quality, Health, Safety, Environment & Security (QHSES) Director for Tesco Corporation where he was responsible for the development and implementation of all global strategic and tactical QHSES initiatives. Before that, he served as the Europe-Eurasia HSE Manager for Hess Corporation. Jack received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Legal Studies from the University of Louisiana at Monroe. He is a Board Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and also holds designation as an Associate in Risk Management (ARM). He is a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE). Jack is also a Certified TapRoot instructor.
Justin Sheets has served as Vice President, Legal and Risk Management since October of 2014. Since joining Matrix Service Company in 2010, Mr. Sheets has served as Sr. Director, Legal and Risk Management; Director, Risk Management; and Sr. Counsel. Prior to Matrix Service Company, Mr. Sheets worked with Conway, McKenzie and Dunleavy in New York consulting with construction clients with a primary focus on mergers and acquisitions, restructuring and liquidations.
Mr. Sheets holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Health and Safety Sciences from Indiana State University and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Tulsa. Mr. Sheets has received his Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist certification. He is a member of the New Jersey Bar Association, Association of Corporate Counsel and the International Risk Management Institute.
Prior to becoming President of Matrix PDM Engineering, Bradley J. Rinehart served as Vice President of Matrix Service om May 1997 to December 2016; Regional Manager – Michigan Region from April 1991 to April 1997; Operations Manager – Michigan Region from January 1990 to March 1991; and as a Project Manager – Michigan Region from January 1988 to December 1989. Mr. Rinehart holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Construction Science from the University of Oklahoma. Mr. Rinehart is a director of the Tulsa Ronald McDonald House.
Ken Erdmann holds a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from Purdue University (1990) and a Master's Degree in Civil Engineering from Oklahoma State University. Ken's engineering expertise has focused primarily in Civil and Structural Engineering disciplines with emphasis in computer methods of structural analysis. Ken joined Matrix Service Company in1991 as the company's first design engineer. He was promoted to Director of Engineering in 1995 and to Vice President of Engineering in 2011. Most recently, he has been promoted to Senior Vice President in December 2016. Throughout his career at Matrix, Ken has implemented new computer systems, led new product development and provided strategic planning for the company's engineering services. In Industry Ken has served on various American Petroleum Institute (API) committees and task groups for over 15 years. Under the API Committee on Refinery Equipment Ken has chaired the manufacturer's and contractor's group and was recently named Chairman of the Design Subgroup for aboveground storage tanks. Ken has 56 Professional Engineering Licenses throughout North America and is the named inventor for various Matrix Service Company patents.
Alan Updyke is President of Matrix Service, a position to which he was promoted in February 2018. He previously served as Senior Vice President, Operations for all Matrix Service Operating Divisions throughout the U.S. and Canada, including Estimating, Project Controls, Business Development and Craft Recruiting. He previously served as Vice President of Construction for Matrix Service. Before joining Matrix Service in July 2012, Mr. Updyke spent the past 17 years with Brinderson, most recently as President of their Western Operations. In that role, Mr. Updyke was responsible for providing strategic leadership and management direction to four regional offices and all major capital construction projects. Before that, Mr. Updyke served in various management positions with Brinderson, including Chief Operating Officer, Executive Vice President, Vice President of Construction, and Vice President of Business Development. Previous t that, Mr. Updyke held the General Managers position for Turner Industries overseeing their West Coast Operations.
James P. Ryan currently serves as President Emeritus for Matrix Service Inc. until his retirement on July 1, 2018. He has served as President of Matrix Service since August 2005. Mr. Ryan previously served the Company as Chief Operating Officer from October 2004 to August 2005. Prior to this, Mr. Ryan served as Vice President of Matrix Service Inc. since October 1999. Prior to joining Matrix Service, Mr. Ryan worked for Gibraltar Construction Company from January 1993 to September 1999 providing construction management services. Previous employers include MW Kellogg, Kiewit Industrial Co. and Hoffman Construction Company. Mr. Ryan also previously provided independent consulting services to the power industry. Mr. Ryan graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1979.
Patrick Chambers is Vice President, Major Projects for Matrix Service with responsibility for engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) projects and large bid/build construction opportunities. He joined Matrix Service in 2014 with responsibility for mid to large capital industrial construction and integrated EPC projects. Before joining Matrix Service, he held leadership positions with Jacobs, Brinderson and Transfield Services. Mr. Chambers has extensive experience in EPC, maintenance, turnarounds and specialty services, leading operations in a variety of market segments. Mr. Chambers holds a Bachelor of Science degree in MEchanical Engineering from California State University, Long Beach.
Kevin A. Durkin has served as Vice President, Business Development for Matrix Service since June 2008. He previously served as Pre-Construction Manager for the Orange Region from November 2006 to May 2008; Small Capital Construction Division Manager for the Orange Region from June 2000 to October 2006; Business Development Manager for Matrix Service Inc. from June 1998 to May 2000; Southwest Turnaround Manager for Colt Construction Division from June 1996 to May 1998; and as assistant Regional Manager for the Orange Region from July 1989 to May 1996. Prior to joining Matrix Service Company, Mr. Durkin worked for HMT Tank Service holding numerous positions in operations, engineering and marketing. Mr. Durkin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration, Marketing from California State University, Fullerton.
Jerry L. James serves as Vice President of Turnaround and Plant Services for Matrix Service. Before joining Matrix Service, he held leadership positions with Brinderson in addition to Colt Construction Company (since acquired by Matrix Service) and TIMEC. Mr. James brings more than 30 years of extensive experience in the refining industry including turnarounds, maintenance and plant services, tank maintenance and repair, industrial cleaning and fabrication.
Brad Killmer serves as Vice President of Accounting and FInance for Matrix Service. He joined Matrix Service in 2001, serving as Business Unit Controller for the Turnaround and Plant Services and National Construction divisions then, most recently, as Business Unit Controller for Matrix Service. Mr. Killmer began his career at Grant Thornton International and also served as Regional Controller for Granite Construction. He is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Construction Industry Financial Professional, Certified Information Technology Professional and Chartered Global Management Accountant. He is a graduate of Brigham Young University.
Shawn Payne is Vice President, Business Services for Matrix Service, where he works closely with operational and functional management across the organization to ensure use of best practices as well as other business-related initiatives that optimize operational and financial performance. Shawn joined Matrix Service as a Division Manager in 2012 and established their Mining and Minerals division. Prior to joining Matrix Service, Shawn held leadership roles at Jacobs, Aker Solutions Americas Inc., and Aker Industrial Constructors Inc., in areas that included operations, finance, treasury and project controls. Shawn has over 20 years of industrial engineering procurement and construction experience and is a graduate of the University of Arizona, where he received his degree in Finance.
Jason Turner joined the company in March 2006 and has been President of Matrix North American Construction since December 2013. Prior to leading the company’s union operations, Mr. Turner was on the executive leadership team most recently serving as Vice President and Treasurer of Matrix Service Company. From March 2006 to May 2010, he served as Director of Finance for the company. Prior to joining Matrix Service Company, Mr. Turner served as Vice President, Commercial Banking for Bank of America, held various positions with Gemstar-TV Guide including Vice President of Finance for TV Guide Networks, and worked for the Federal Reserve Bank. Mr. Turner has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Finance from Oklahoma State University and an MBA from the University of Tulsa. Mr. Turner is active in the community, currently serving on the board of the Jenks Public Schools Foundation and on its Development Committee. He is past Chairperson of Oklahoma Project Woman, an organization he continues to passionately support along with other non-profit organizations in the Tulsa area.
Terry D. Stewart has served as VP of the Canadian Operations for Matrix NAC since 2008. Mr. Stewart previously served as General Manager of Operations from 2006 to 2008 and Project Manager from 2005 to 2006 for the company.
Mr. Stewart began his career with the company as a Millwright General Foreman in 1994 at General Motors and has worked in Mechanical Superintendent, Site Manager, Project Manager and Area Project Manager roles. Mr. Stewart has assembled a 30 year construction career in the automotive, steel, power and pulp and paper industries. Mr. Stewart completed the Millwright Apprentice Training Program at George Brown College in 1988.
Troy Blair is Vice President of Legal & Project Services for Matrix NAC responsible for legal, supply chain and project controls for the organization. He previously served as Sr. Vice President and General Counsel for Kvaerner NAC, Vice President of Legal and Commercial from 2009-2012 and as Division Counsel/Director EPC Contracts from 2007-2009. Prior to joining Matrix NAC, Mr. Blair worked as a construction attorney with Duane Morris LLP from 2003 to 2007 and Pepper Hamilton LLP from 2000 to 2003. Mr. Blair began his career in the industry as a Geologist and later Contracts/Litigation Administrator with Kaiser Engineers from 1992-2000.
Mr. Blair earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Geology from Allegheny College in 1992 and received a Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University Law School in 2001 where he was a member of Law Review. Mr. Blair is a member of the Engineers society of Western Pennsylvania and admitted to practice law in Pennsylvania State Courts and the US District Court for Western District of Pennsylvania. Mr. Blair also serves on the board of the directors for The Outdoor Classroom in Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania.
Jim Faroh has served as Vice President of Operations for Matrix NAC since 2010. Mr. Faroh has full profit and loss responsibility for the Chicago operation. He has worked in various operational roles since joining Matrix NAC full time in 1995. Mr. Faroh previously served as Vice President of Business Development from 2009 to 2010, Director of Operations from 2005- 2009, General Manager Operations 2001 - 2005, and various field operational roles from 1995 - 2001. Mr. Faroh has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Management from Purdue University. Mr. Faroh is a member of the Construction Industry Institute where he serves as a Board of Advisor and is a member of the Executive Committee. Mr. Faroh is a Board of Trustee for the Construction Advancement Foundation. He also serves as Vice-President of the Board of Directors for Share Foundation, Inc. and the Board of Admirals for Pirates, Inc.
Jeff Hermann serves as Vice President of Energy for Matrix NAC. In this capacity, Mr. Hermann is responsible for major capital projects in the oil, gas and chemical and power delivery and power generation markets. Prior to joining Matrix NAC, Mr. Hermann served as Area Manager and Operations Manager for Kiewit’s energy group and, before that, as a Project Engineering Manager in the power division of Black & Veatch. Collectively, Mr. Hermann brings over 26 years of experience in the oil, gas and chemical and power industries, both domestically and internationally. He is a licensed professional engineer in multiple states.
Mr. Hermann graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and his Master’s in Business Administration from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, Global Executive program.
Greg Lennox serves as Vice President of Operations for Matrix NAC. Mr. Lennox joined Matrix NAC in 2016 and is accountable for day-to-day operations of its Canadian subsidiaries in Burlington, Sarnia and St. John.
Mr. Lennox has more than twenty-five years of experience in the delivery of construction and major maintenance projects with a number of energy and power-related companies, including Northland Power, General Electric Canada and the AES Corporation. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the province of Ontario with a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Science (Mechanical Engineering) from Queen’s University at Kingston.
Douglas J. Montalbano has served as Vice President, Business Development since November 2014. Prior to leading the Company’s business development organization, Mr. Montalbano was Director, Business Development Fossil/T&D for URS Energy & Construction, Inc. Mr. Montalbano held various positions of increasing responsibility at URS Energy & Construction, Inc. and its predecessor company since 2004, including Associate General Counsel.
Mr. Montalbano has a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Villanova University College of Commerce and Finance and a Juris Doctor from Villanova University School of Law. Mr. Montalbano is a licensed attorney in New York and New Jersey.
Vicki Reese is Vice President of Accounting and Finance for Matrix NAC. She previously served as Business Unit Controller for Matrix Service overseeing all aspects of accounting and finance for the Storage and Specialty Vessel Division, Fabrication operations and Matrix PDM Engineering.
Ms. Reese began her career with Matrix Service in 1986 and has served the company in positions of increasing responsibility, achieving a strong track record of performance and a reputation as a well-respected partner to the business. She is a Certified Public Accountant.
